The GCN Regions and Volunteers

Throughout it's history the GCN has had many volunteers helping out with many things such as running GCN stands at shows and supporting local clubs in various ways. 

Over time there have been many views of what our Volunteers should be doing and how to go about it. What we have done here is take all of that, take the core elements from them all and compared that to feedback we have been receiving to get a clear picture of what our Volunteers can be doing. 

The GCN has a core purpose of providing assistance to its member clubs in the following five ways:

  • To provide assistance in the running of local gaming events
  • To facilitate Club activities
  • To provide assistance in the running of games at both local and national levels
  • To provide communication methods for and between Gaming Clubs and their individual members
  • To facilitate Club Development and growth
  • To promote good communications between Gaming Clubs and Games Originators, Manufacturers and Retailers.To provide assistance in the running of games at both local and national levels

It is with these objectives in mind that the roles of Representatives and Coordinators will now be in place with their own specific aims and expectations. 

How this will work is we have split the Territories over which our Member Clubs exist into 7 Regions:

  • Northern England

Covering Cheshire, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Shropshire, Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear

  • The Midlands

Covering Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Gloucestershire, Hereford & Worcester, Warwickshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk

  • Southern England

Covering Avon, Dorset, Somerset, Cornwall, Kent, West Sussex, East Sussex,  Essex, Greater London, Surrey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire

  • Scotland

  • Wales

  • Northern Ireland

  • European Union

Each Region will have one Coordinator whose role will cover the running of the region, that is ensuring Representatives are in place, which areas they will be responsible for and acting as a central point of contact between the local level of representatives and the council to ensure any and all feedback is passed onto the correct person.

The Representatives will have an area to cover, agreed on between them and their Coordinator based on available transport location etc, within which will be several Member Clubs. The Reps will then act as the main point of contact between the Clubs and the Network. 

This is not to say that a Rep or Coordinator will be left to their own devices and given no support. We have systems in place already using social media and a 'GCN Officials' forum to act as repositories of information and places to ask for help and advice. 

One big change we will be implementing with this is a way for the Volunteers to let the Council and therefore the wider Network know just what it is they and the Member Clubs in their areas are doing. Currently we have Volunteers going out there and doing fantastic work with many different clubs and at many different shows and we wanted to create a system that allows them to easily and clearly let us know. This will also mean we can easily pull together features on Member Clubs or on the Reps themselves for use on the site and in the new Newsletter. Plus with the new AGM we have another change coming in to allow us to recognise those Volunteers who are really pushing themselves, the Network and its Members out there (see tomorrows article for more info on this)

As part of this change we will also be changing our use of Facebook. At present we have 15 different Regional Facebook groups, this will be reduced to 7 in line with the new Regions detailed above. The reasons for this are to allow any advertising of Club events our Members let us know about to reach a wide audience but also to be targeted geographically to help the impact of this advertising. These groups will be administrated by the Reps and Coordinator from the relevant Region and are a place for not just your events to be shared but also your hobby in general as well as for getting GCN information and news out to you.
